Eighteen

With one arm folded behind his head and the other wrapped around the woman curled on his chest, Reaper stared blindly at the shadowed ceiling and wondered what the hell he’d been thinking, fucking Lilith. Caught in the vortex of hunger, he had no problem believing he could fill the years’ old hole she left behind with one go around without a damn thing changing.

Good luck with that, dumbass!

One time hadn’t done shit but prime the pump. Hell, after the initial storm broke, he barely surfaced for air before diving back in and taking her under with him. At least they managed to remember the condom during the second go around.

Even now, with his body happily worn out, the hunger still crawled through him. No matter the self-recriminations that battered his brain, he didn’t move away from the warm weight of her. Nope, because he was a sorry ass bastard, and like a junkie with his favorite fix, he refused to acknowledge the truth that stared into his dark soul—his need for Lilith had never gone away. And this little adventure not only confirmed that fact but proved his desire for her was so deep he wasn’t sure he’d ever escape.

Did you really want to?

Not ready to answer, even in the safety of his head, he played with her thin, beaded braids in the moonlight that seeped through the partially opened curtains. He drew lazy patterns along the warm silk of her back, his fingers slipping under the sheet tangled at their waists to drift along the sweet rise of her ass and back up.

A hitch in her warm breath feathering over his chest ended in a delicate shiver that pressed those enticing curves closer. Guess he wasn’t the only one awake. Not ready to break the delicate peace, he didn’t stop caressing her, willing to let the quiet hold a little longer.

It was time to man the fuck up. Ten plus years was a hell of a long time to hold a grudge. Not to mention, it was fucking exhausting to maintain. Havoc and Math accused him of being willfully blind when it came to Lilith, and they weren’t wrong.

What was that saying? Hindsight is twenty-twenty? Looking back, he could admit he’d been hell bent on taking Michael out, to the point he hadn’t given the first damn about anything or anyone else. As far as he had been concerned, you either joined the Michael Hate Parade or you got the fuck out of his way, and that went double for his woman. When she refused to get on board, he left her, blaming her choice to put others before his vengeance.

There was no doubt it was a shitty thing to do, but damn it all, his unit had been wiped out in one vicious stroke and that brutal reality check left his imagination roaming through endless nightmares, until he finally made a decision.

Better for him to push the last few remaining important people in his life away, than lose them to someone’s treachery.
